First of all, you start by completely emptying your wardrobe. Lay everything out sorted, such as jumpers and sweaters, shirts, T-shirts, etc., in piles on your bed, for example. And yes, gathering all those loose socks together again too! All the clothing you haven't worn for more than one season, or that you don't really like after all, or that is too big or too small, you set aside to possibly sell or donate to charity.

Folding and ironing

To be able to wear your winter clothing again straight away after the summer, it's nice if you've put it into the garment covers or storage boxes clean and neatly folded/ironed. Also store the clothing by type, so shirts together, men's trousers, etc. — this also makes it easy to search when you want to wear something earlier. It's important to wash the garments before you fold them, otherwise the rest of the clothing takes on the smells from the unwashed garment. Clean clothes are also a lot less attractive to critters such as the clothes moth.

Cleaning and finding suitable storage space

Your wardrobe is now completely empty, so it's a great moment to give it a thorough clean. This is best done with a microfibre cloth and a bucket with a splash of cleaning vinegar; for a fresh scent you can of course also use an all-purpose cleaner. Make sure you really reach every nook and cranny before you fill the wardrobe with your summer clothing again.

To store your winter clothing, you can use plastic storage bins or vacuum bags; in any case, make sure that no critters can get to it. If you fold or hang up the garments neatly, they stay in good condition the longest, so pay attention to this when storing them.

Storage

Before you store the winter clothing, it must be clean, in order to prevent clothes moths. The larvae of moths love clothing with stains, deodorant smells or dirty collars. (See also our blog about preventing clothes moths)

If you don't have enough space in your wardrobe, sealable bins for your jumpers and shirts and garment covers for your suits, blazers and jackets are handy for storing your clean clothing. When storing your shoes, it's useful to fill them with newspaper, for example, so they don't lose their shape.

Bring on summer

You're now all set to fill your clean wardrobe with your summer clothing, and because you now have plenty of space, you can also see straight away what outfits you still have. And then you'll also see which items you can still shop for at Suitable to make your summer collection complete again.

Enjoy your tidy wardrobe!
