Make a plan in advance
Before you start rummaging through the wardrobe, it's wise to think about why you're wearing layers. Your outfit will have to meet different expectations when you cycle every day than when you only go outside to step into a warm car. The weather naturally also plays a big role; you don't want to arrive at your destination sweaty or soaked. So check the weather forecast the evening before and take appropriate precautions.
Don’t wear more than three layers
Especially when the mercury plunges, it's tempting to put on as many layers as possible. Yet this isn't wise. When you wear too many layers, you overheat more quickly and your freedom of movement is restricted. This makes you look more voluminous than you really are. So wear no more than three layers to stay comfortable. Combine garments that you can wear independently of each other. That way you can take off layers without any problem or swap them around during the day. So make sure every layer has a clear function.
Consider which materials you prefer
The art of a layered outfit is combining fabrics that are pleasant to wear together. Merino wool jumpers, for example, are suitable for both business and casual occasions. Wool regulates your body temperature so you don't get too warm or too cold too quickly. Fleece cardigans with a zip are an easy way to add a warm layer. The same goes for flannel shirts. They're not only nice and warm, but also thin enough to wear comfortably in layers. Of course, it's important to check whether the layers complement each other. That way you keep looking well-groomed.
