What is a suit?

A (business) suit is a formal men's outfit. In general, you can divide it between a two-piece or three-piece suits. A two-piece suit consists of a pair of pants and a jacket, while a three-piece suit also includes a vest. Usually, the jacket of the suit has a single row of buttons. This is called single-breasted. If the jacket has a double row of buttons, it is called double-breasted. A suit also often has pockets. Use them as little as possible to keep it in shape.

History of the suit

The predecessor of the suits as we know them today originated in the English army in the 18th century. The suits as we know them today were developed during the Victorian period (1837-1901). Because the British Empire owned many colonies during that period, the suit spread like wildfire throughout the world.

Different suits

Each country also has its characteristics when it comes to designing suits. The most popular ones are:

  • The Italian fit, a slim fit that fits the body nicely.
  • The English fit, slightly fitted, with a double slit at the back.
  • The American fit, loose and not fitted, often with three buttons.

For special occasions, men also often wear a suit, for example, black or white tie event. You wear a tuxedo at a black tie event, and at a white tie event, you wear a dress suit. Most suits are made of virgin wool, yet there are also many suits made of cashmere, cotton, linen, or synthetic materials. It is best to choose wool in the winter and linen in summer.
